Jair Jurrjens - SP - ATL:

Mar 12, 5:30PM
Jurrjens managed to make his spring debut, anyway. Jurrjens threw two scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday before the game was called after three due to showers that washed away the exhibition slate in Florida. Jurrjens had been struggling with inflammation around his right shoulder and manager Bobby Cox decided to be cautious. Jurrjens, who turned 24 in January, went 14-10 with a 2.60 ERA for the Braves last season. Jurrjens was supposed to start Wednesday against the New York Yankees, but the game was called due to rain.

Lance Berkman - 1B - HOU:
Berkman hopes to be...
Mar 12, 5:18PM
Lance Berkman (knee surgery) believes he can be ready by Opening Day. Big Puma is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Saturday and is expected to miss at least two weeks. "It's a pretty cut-and-dried procedure," he said Friday. "I don't anticipate having any lingering effects from it. They said it's about a three-to-four-week recovery period, so I'm hoping it's closer to three weeks and I will be ready for Opening Day." He's 34 years of age and has had similar knee issues in the past; we're doubting he'll be ready for the regular season opener.

Gaby Sanchez - 1B - FLA:
Sanchez leading chase...
Mar 12, 4:58PM
Gaby Sanchez is believed to be leading the chase for the Marlins' starting first base gig over youngster Logan Morrison. Sanchez is 6-for-15 this spring while Morrison, 22, is 1-for-18. "Obviously, if one's hitting .390 and the other's hitting .057 -- competition is competition," manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday. "If one guy's hitting .380 and the other guy hits .060, we can't say, `Wait a second, the other guy makes the team.'" If the decision is going to be based solely on results, our money's on Sanchez, but the talented Morrison could easily own the job by the All-Star break.

Mar 12, 4:01PM
Derrek Lee was scratched from Friday's lineup with a bruised foot. Lee was pulled from a spring game Wednesday after fouling a pitch off his left foot. He is listed as day-to-day and is expected to return to action over the weekend. Nothing to worry about here.

Carlos Beltran - CF - NYM:
Beltran to begin...
Mar 12, 3:58PM
Carlos Beltran (knee) told the Newark Star-Ledger Friday that he expects to begin playing in rehab games by early April. It'll only take about a week-and-a-half of rehab games for Beltran to get geared up for the regular season, so it sounds like a real possibility that he could return by the end of April. The outfielder underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee back in January.

Mar 12, 3:54PM
Street says his 20-pitch performance in batting practice went well and his right shoulder was fine. Colorado has been cautious with Street this spring training after he experienced inflammation in the shoulder. He said he was hitting his spots Friday and getting good movement on his pitches. Street converted 35 of 37 save chances last season and is hoping to throw in a simulated game Monday. If that goes well, he could make his first exhibition appearance later that week.
